Deer hunting success

Not the kind of success I really wanted but better than nothing.
Thanksgiving day is the opening day of gun season for deer here where I live. I took my grandson Hunter with me,was going to let him hoot a deer if we saw any. Right at daybreak three of these jokers came by our stand,I shot two of them. Friday afternoon I saw another one but couldn't get a shot.

Grandsons went out Friday and hit a hot spot. Matt on Right buck came 127 inches approx. They sure had some stories.20121123_081242.jpg

I will be heading out come morning black powder. Have not got one yet by ball and powder, but that is probably because I built the gun. hopefully this year will be the year. Those in the pic are beauts. they should be proud.

Calvin your grandson will remember that day for the rest of his life. I admire you for taking him out and enjoying the beauty of Gods creation and building a bond stronger than the steel we build knives from.
I never got to hunt with my grampa, something that I wish I had the opportunity to have done.

Amen Eric,
I never got to hunt at all when I was a boy. I really enjoy taking my grand children hunting and fishing and shooting and playing outdoors.

Those boys with their Dad started at an early age hunting and fishing. I have pictures of them barely tall enough to get over the weeds with a rod and reel in their hands. I tried to get them on turkeys whenever I can.

As soon as season is over they will be running the woods at night coon hunting.

Must have been a good day to kill Coyotes,of course any day is a good day to kill a Coyote.
This one was killed by my dad on a Thanksgiving morning deer hunt as well. That is my daughter with him.

God bless

Heres my daughters first buck. She did a great job. That parts cool but the other part of the story is he was field dressed and skinned for a shoulder mount with my third built knife. It worked well and held a solid edge the entire job.

What a great story! Nice deer! Happy to hear the knife worked well. Congratulations to you and her.

Cojab that is a super nice buck. Tell her congratulations and think of the memories you will have to share together.

Hey Guys,

I was given some deer already cut up; ground deer, steaks and stew meat. The guy ran out of room in his freezer!

How about some great recipes?

Cathy

We use the ground meat in spaghetti, lasagna, burritos, soup, chilli, etc. I like my venison steaks fried, tenderize with a cuber or butcher knife, cut into 2" squares, marinate in A-1 sauce for about 10 min., flour and deep fry,eat with more A-1. As for the stew meat I'd cook it in the crock pot with bar-b-q sauce untill tender, pour off that juice then add new sauce and heat and eat. We sometimes cook the steaks like Swiss steak or smothered in brown gravy.
The meat you were given may be ok and it may not,it all depends on how it was handled from the time it was killed untill it was frozen and how long it has been frozen. Good luck.

To knifecarver; Did you happen to get any backstrap or tenderloin. That is good stuff. I like to just butterfly them nice and thin and fry them in a cast iron skillet with butter and nothing else other than salt and pepper. The burger is great for anything you would normally use burger for. (except for burgers. just my personnal preference)
To Mike: Thanks. Yes sir, a very good buck and I am very proud. It was a great time I will always remember. I took her out for her first deer (doe) a couple of years ago that didnt go as well as this one. On this buck she went out and practiced shooting a bunch ahead of time and did a perfect job. Yep, very proud.

My wife took our 13 year old grand daughter deer hunting for her first time last year during an anterless deer season here in Florida. She killed a doe and as soon as the deer hit the ground she told my wife that she wanted her whole deer made into jerky. She is going to kill her first buck this year, she says.

Great to see you guys getting the kids out in the woods hunting. I hope someday to take my daughter hunting. She is a little young yet, however she loves deer meat.

Cathy the only thing I would add is don't be afraid to add a little butter or fat when frying deer. I find deer a little lean and will burn fast

Good luck to the granddaughter Calvin!
+1 on the butter or fat for frying. I also have it pretty hot and go fast. DONT over cook. If you like your meat a bit rare its definitly best that way. Over cooking gets it a little tough real quick. One other thing on the burgers. Like I said before, I'm not a big fan of burger patties from game animals just because it is so lean. However a friend of mine says he has 1 pound of bacon ground into 10 pounds of game meat burger and says that makes great burgers. I havn't tried it yet but I plan on it sometime.

Thanks for all the great tips and recipes! I've only cooked deer a few times and I've never tried ground deer. I had an uncle in Canada that cooked all his game meat in beer.LOL
