few questions

Hey guys, i have few questions

1 when grinding G10 or micarta i... Smell them, does that mean they go past the respirator? I believe it fits well to the face and i use dust/natural gas filters

2 whats the purpose of the choil?

3 any tips on making (or acquiring) push sticks or anything similar for sanding? (I realize its a simple matter but i tried making a simple one from micarta and yup, managed to ruin it)

4 any idea about lubricant to use while sanding that wouldnt cause the blade to rust? Teh window cleaning stuff? I tried oil but with high grits it made sanding bit impossible

5 any plans or pics for sanding set up? Vise or fixture, something to hold the blade and hopefully prevent tip from flexing

6 any good sharpening tutorials?

7 if the edge gets thinner than .5mm before sharpening, sand/grind to get it back to that thockness before sharpening or just get it done during sharpening? specially if some parts are about .5mm and others thinner

Will probably be adding fewmore questions soon

Thanks

update 1:

8 why do we finish with sanding along the blade? i know it makes it look better? but is that just it?

9 do you guys clean respirators? how?

10 i want to start marking knives (with letter punches) is there a specific set up or method to avoid messing mess ups? also best locations on a knife? i fear after HT and regrinding the letter would be ground off

thanks

If you can smell it past the respirator, there maybe a problem but odor doesn't necessarily mean your mask doesn't fit and isn't doing its job.

a choil may not have a purpose. It simply is a transition from cutting edge to handle. I could be wrong. Some one else will say it is for a place to put your finger for "choking up" on a knife. That in my mind is a handle.

use a wood dowel for a push stick. It doesn't scratch and its cheap. Sand it to a shape you like. I've never been good with one but I do use one occasionally.

When hand sanding, water cuts, oil polishes.

I use WD-40 to keep my sand paper cutting. I made this for sanding. I think it was Nick Wheeler who came up the original idea I just copied it off some forum. I think the pictures are pretty self explanatory. I did put it in the shop tips and tricks (a lot of good info in there)

thanks Brad

yeah i saw that design and was planning on applying it, altho his seemed bit complicated so might have gone with something simpler for a while, i already got a T beam and was supposed to round the end and decide on screw locations. you actually reminded me, thanks!

When I started knife making I bought a used small paddle Bread board at a Garage sale and used a large C-clamp to mount the blade on a work bench to have a surface to hand sand my blades on.

Least expensive fixture I have bought to date. .50 cents.

thanks Laurence, i do something the same, just a piece of wood, but i seriously need to find a solution for the flexing of the blades when i sand near the tip, the screws in the above fixture do the trick apparently

on the last knife i just stuck rolled up paper under it, but thats not really practical!

Shokr,
What ever works that is relatively safe is practical! Paper, Styrofoam a chuck of wood?

Just set something up that is safe & repeatable.
