First Damascus Knife

Hey Guys,
I shifted gears and grabbed a piece of damascus I had sitting on the shelf for a few months just waiting to be ground. I dove in after my last knife , making one mistake after another. Few firsts for me here .. I ground this blade with out using any jigs or guides. I ground it freehand. I think it came out pretty good for my first one.

OL 8.5"
5/32" damascus random pattern
416 bolsters and pins with a satin finish.
8/9 oz leather
Scales are stabilized. Don't know what kind of burl it is . I have some pics of it posted on a thread called "Shop Pics"

Critique is welcome. Thanks for looking..

Man, that is a beauty! Great job on this one Mikey...

I really love that sheath too. Seems like you are figuring that light box out also.

Mikey,
I know your very happy with this one and you should be,it's a beauty.
You gonna give up jig grinding altogether?

Hey Steve , thanks and I think I am getting the light box under control , still learning that different backgrounds make a difference with the picture too..

Calvin, yes , I'm giving up the grinding jigs all together. I just need to go slower with my belt speed and I'm able to control everything better.. Besides , I need to practice for the big 12" Damascus knife w/ ivory handle job I have waiting.

Mikey,
Very SWEET! I like it all! From the blade & handle profile to your bevel grind, Bolster and stabilized mystery wood all balance in proportions and flow together just right!

Yep! I would keep this as a pattern in the Debart line up!

P.S. This gets a five ***** thread rating from me!

I guess I should start making some profiled blanks of thse things huh? Every time I dram something out and transfer it to steel , it never ever comes out like the drawing . Im always changing this , shortening and rounding edges etc.mSo antime someone wants a knife that they saw and like , i look at a picture and go from there. I guess it wouldnt be a bad idea to have templates though.

For that 12" knife you might want to consider rough grinding on your platen then finishing up on a 9" disk grinder with a tapered face, and a table to rest on.

You're a natural Mike.
I haven't seen a bad one yet. The templates are a good idea as a general guideline, you can put your own twist on the finished knife from there.

Thanks guys , great comments from great friends ! I enjoyed this build and Im happy with the results . I had some challenges .. This was the first time i actually had to finish the bolsters and scales before they were glued and pinned in place. I was afraid to grind down the spine ( top and bottom ) and not be able to etch properly . It was a learning curve. I probably could have went back with with the FC and a q tip.

if you would of never said anything i would of never guessed you done it freehand. great job it look awesome.
