Folder Pivot questions?

So I am looking into making a folder and I have come across pivots that I like but they are .5" in length. Do you guys cut the pivots and screws to length when you are making a folder that is smaller than the .5" for the pivot?

I ask because not only does USAknifmaker have .5" in length pivots but Alpha Knife Supply and other providers have .5" in length pivot pins.

Yes.....you'll almost always have to trim pivots and screws when building a folder. Try to find pivots as close to the length you require as possible.... especially if they are the single screw type (headed on one side and accepts a screw on the other)..if you have to trim too much off of that type, you CAN run out of threads. I generally use the "barrel" type pivots, that take a screw on each end......the majority of the pivots I buy are 3/8" long.

Depending on the type of folder I'm making, I do it a couple of different ways....

1. If making a liner lock....I get the blade and back spacer to finished thickness, assemble the knife (including washers if you're using them), and using the KMG/Flat platen, sand the pivot flush with the liners on a 400 grit belt.

2. A frame-lock is a little trickier.....because on those I counterbore the scales...which are the liners and scales in one. What I do there is figure the use a plate with a pivot sized hole drilled in it.....get it close on the belt, then final size it on a granite plate/block by hand.
