Tais Flies

Here's some of my recent fly tying attempts,... getting ready to do some fishing this summer.

My stepdaughter, "Lucy", lives with her fiancé on private land (no fishing license required) along this stretch of stream in Arizona. I'd heard stories about the fish in it, but didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. The smallest fish I saw, (outside of some minnows), was an 18 inch trout,... up to about 32 inches! There's also supposed to be some big bass and monster catfish. Next time I'm going more prepared.

Looking good Tai,I hope you catch a mess of fish. Ain't nuttin I like better than fried fish!
I also think you have the start to a good young twister,Tai ties files...

I can understand the appeal to fly tying but I can't seem to cast with out snapping off the hook.
Fishing is always good, even if you don't catch much.

Good lookin' flys Tai...I love the to tie foam spiders/ants with legs...Bass eat um up....We are in the foothills so the water is a little warm for trout but a river grown smallmouth is a lot of fun....

Patience Tracy...You have to let the weight of the line work for you...Learn roll casting, a little easier on the flys..and old shoulders like mine.....

Thanks. I'm pretty rusty at the tying and casting, but used to do a lot of it in my younger days,... but then had kids, responsibilities etc... Kids are all grown up, out of the house and I really don't have too many responsibilities anymore. I just need some practice... it's coming back slowly. I'm just saving all the rejects so I can strip the hooks and use them again. I also recently bought a "Tent Cot" for camping... slickest thing since the sleeping bag. Got a deal through the Sears website.

Seeing those big trout at Lucy's place, got me excited about it again. By the time I get back up there I have a feeling all those monster trout will have moved to cooler waters upstream and the bass, catfish, carp etc., will have moved in. Planning to go back soon, so I guess I'll find out. I'm trying to tie for a variety of species.

The foam flies are completely new to me, but it’s an easy material to work with,… fun.

Here’s some little tying tools I made to keep in my bag.

I use the knife mostly for stripping hooks, cutting cork for poppers and a few other odds and end.

The little hand vice is nice to have, just a tiny vice glued into a cork.. I have a standard tying vice that mounts on a desk or table top too, but when you are down by the waters and there is no table to mount it on, the little hand vice is great to have. I actually like it better for tying some flies. It’s nice because you can turn it in any direction… neat piece of old school technology.

The bodkin is from a big needle, piece of brass tubing and some wood. It’s great for fluffing dubbing, helpful for tying certain types of knots, and nice for poking head cement, super glue etc. out of the hook eyes, if needed, so you can get your tippet through.
