How do you hold your folder blades for grinding?

Might sound like a dumb question but I'm wondering how people hold their blades?

Do you hold it in a fixture to make it bigger in the hand or just leave as the final blade size, in hand? Maybe you only cut the tang down after the bevels are ground?

I don't know and I'm curious what works for you. :)

I use a welding magnet to hold the blade. It really improved my grinding when I didn't have to worry about my fingers getting ground away anymore.

I make two blades at a time back to back. One makes a handle for the other while grinding. I cut them apart before HT. After HT, it's easy to hold one in my fingers while cleaning it up on the belt grinder.

This is a great question since I just bought a used 2x72"- I have been re handling some older folders with some mammoth
and I am eager to learn on this subject. Great question indeed.

I use small vice-grips and hold the blade by the tang. Just put a small piece of leather around the tang to keep from scratching. If I have the knife together when I am ready to grind the blade I just hold the handle to grind it that way.

I hold the blade between my thumb and forefinger of one hand and my thumb or forfinger of the other hand is my push stick.

I made a special tool consisting of a mild steel bar (.25 x 1.0 x 4.0) drilled for a .125 dia. pivot pin and a slot for a shcs and a nut that fits against the tang of the blade. This seems to work for me. Dan

blade holder

You do not have to get exotic for a holder while you grind. Just get a piece of bar stock and build one of these.
