It sounds like the researchers observed a particle of their own consciousness...

I don't believe it is the missing particle at all but then I am not a physicist.
Transient mass doesn't make sense.

I think the standard come back goes something like,… “It doesn’t have to make sense and we don’t have to like it, in order for it to be true“. ;)

A lot was riding on the discovery/observation of the Higgs boson. However, the researchers can’t say they are absolutely sure they found it. They almost found it. They are also not absolutely sure what it is they think they might have found and probably never will be.

Is the God particle a discovery or a complete fabrication?

Here’s an interesting article written before the “Big reveal”, ( which revealed nothing), that sums up what a lot of people have been thinking for a long time.

The End Of Physics And Other Science?
http://www.johnjazwiecblog.com/2011/11/the-end-of-physics-and-other-science.html

I think one of the main fundamental problems here is that human understanding, observation and/or knowledge will always be finite and will never be able to fully grasp the infinite… not in this lifetime anyway.

However, maybe that’s a good thing and what life is really all about. We act on what we "believe", not what we think we might know…

BossDog,
None of this stuff makes sense! That's why there is all the buzz about it!
90% plus percent of all "Truths" in Science are proven wrong in time. That's the way it goes.

Maybe science should just stop proving itself wrong and just go with what it's got.

It’s like it’s, it’s own antiparticle…

… They had me at the atom. ;)

Science is the pursuit of knowledge, that is never going to stop. "Scientists" will accept things that are proven wrong and move on, something alot of folks could learn from. There are lots of things out there that I believe will never be proven, but does that mean we should give up?

Zeb

I don't think anyone said we should give up on the pursuit of knowledge. For sure not on an individual basis. What fun would that be? However, there is a point of diminishing return in almost any venture. I think this maybe one of those instances.

There will always be room for innovation and progress within the framework that's already been established, though the framework itself may not be perfect. Perhaps we would be better off to concentrate on using and refining what we already have, to make the world a better place, than to go off chasing after rainbows.

"When one door closes another one opens".

Maybe the distinctions between the "fields of knowledge" and academics will fade away and scholarship will once again be viewed as a single discipline. That should be enough to keep us all busy for a very long time.

The person that solves gravity and can manage it will be the richest person in all of time.

LOL

There are typically missing links with “reverse scientific method”. It starts with a theory, then works backwards towards making observations, gathering facts and information to support it. Not that it can’t work that way. It’s just backwards and tends to carry bias in favor of the theory.

It would have been more proper had they observed it first and then formed theories as to what it was.

I have been following this Higgs Boson particle debacle for years.
I still don't think it is the gravity giver they want it to be. I think they have another level of smaller size particles they need to find.
Dark matter...that is where the voodoo is..

"Let no man deceive himself. If any man thinketh that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool, that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He that taketh the wise in their craftiness: and again, The Lord knoweth the reasonings of the wise that they are vain. Wherefore let no one glory in men. For all things are yours; whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; and ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's."

1 Corinthians 3:18-23
