Was Peter Wright???

I'm a stock removal guy... I just don't have room in my tiny little shop for all the stuff you hot-metal bangers need. So guess what I bought yesterday anyway?...

{backstory}
So I like to have random craigslist searches saved on my iphone; things like "surface grinder", "milling", "mig welder", "escort service"... and obviously "anvil". Mostly the "anvil" search nets me things like musical instrument cases and vintage Gregorian butter dishes, but yesterday something more interesting popped up.

I don't have the original photos that were posted with the ad, but I was immediately interested in what I saw. I called the seller ASAP, but he said that somebody was already coming to pick it up. Anyway, the other guy didn't show and I got a call later in the day. Here's a close-up of what caught my eye (the seller was unable to read it).

Now unless I'm mistaken, that top word is ?ETE? and the next word is ?RIGH?. I feel fairly comfortable translating it as PETER WRIGHT. I couldn't figure out the third word on my own, but have since figured out it says PATENT with the fourth word quite obviously being ENGLAND. There are some other characters here and there that I haven't interpreted, but it looks like the weight info is 1-1-23 which calculates to approximately 163#. The seller said it weighs in at 159#... so it seems like the right ballpark.

I'm pretty happy. Probably means I'll have to buy a house with a bigger shop now. ;)

Edit: Price was about $1.53 per lb.

those are great anvils I have one myself . a good way to test them for temper is set them on wood base of some kind, and tap it with hammer if she rings real good it a good one .

Erin you are wright in your translation. The word below england is solid and the one below that is wrought these two form a circle around the middle 1 of the 1 1 23. I saw that on cl you are lucky I am in Idaho so no way that I could beat you to it.

That's about the size of mine,I had to give way too much for mine---$55 bucks:p-A great anvil by the way!!Regards Butch

Nice find.
It looks like there's no swayback too.
Bought mine for $60....not for the anvil, but I had to pay the seller to move his junk pile in the barn to get at it. He said it had been under the pile since the 70's.

nice. I have one of those myself. It looks like your edges are good and the face is nice and flat. That baby should ring nice and loud. Great price too...

Erin, the roof of my first forge was a Bradford pear tree, I'm sure you'll figure something out. Back in May I bought a pretty good shed to set up a hotshop in. It came with a pretty nice house too.

I saw that, and was going to buy it, but between already having my dream anvil and no space... I just clicked past the listing. :(

Glad that YOU got it though Erin! 2thumbs

Not enough space... tell me about it. My shop is about a third the size of yours (and not nearly so clean and organized).

That is a nice looking anvil. Fantastic condition. Great score.

I've heard one good way to check the rebound is to drop a ball bearing on it and look at how high it returns. Good anvils are 75% rebound or better. Or so they say...
